1 Corinthians 11:3, "head"

1 Corinthians 11:3

3But I want you to understand that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.

Paul wants the people of Corinth to come to understand that Christ is the head of man and the head of a woman is the man, this is the essence of what he is writing here. Later, he says this subjection is from the scriptures, a command of God. In, 1 Timothy, Paul shows that this was the intent of God when he made man first and then Eve. This is a principle that governs the relationship of men and women. It is key hear that Christ is said to be the head of man. Man’s headship is a stewardship under Christ and this position is not to be held in a way that demeans the women. Ephesians 5 (although it is talking about a husband and wife, I believe it fits here as well) shows that it must be as the example of Christ with the church. It must be remembered that women are Christ’s and we are only steward’s to show God’s grace, providing a covering for the women to honor them and build them up in the Lord.

Also notice that in this verse it says, "God is the head of Christ" and this is true. But Jesus is no less God and yet he subjects himself. The woman is not lesser than man in importance or purpose, but as God the Father, the Holy Spirit, and Jesus have different roles and yet are all fully God, so does a man and a woman have different roles, yet one is not superior over the other.
